Vitamin C is one of the few active ingredients that when applied to the skin works to stimulate collagen and reduce wrinkles, not just improve the appearance of wrinkles. Vitamin C is an anti-oxidant which is very beneficial to the skin. It stimulates your skin to make its own natural moisturizers called glycosaminoglycans. Glycosaminoglycans will allow your skin to absorb moisture from your body which reduces the need for applying other moisturizers. The problem with topical Vitamin C is that it is highly unstable in air and water. After being exposed to air or water, topical Vitamin C becomes oxidized. Once it is oxidized, it not only does not work anymore, it actually becomes a "pro-oxidant" which can actually cause wrinkles! You can usually tell when Vitamin C becomes oxidized because it starts to turn yellow or brown. Lots of manufactures know this, so they tint their products. There is something else you need to know about topical Vitamin C products. Vitamin C is a water soluble vitamin. Skin is not water soluble, it is fat soluble. That means water soluble products that are placed on the skin have very little ability to penetrate into the skin. It is like trying to mix water into oil. It just won't work! In order to get water soluble topical Vitamin C to penetrate into fat soluble skin, the Vitamin C must be ionized. This is done by lowering the pH of the product. This lower pH is necessary to allow the Vitamin C to penetrate. This low pH may make products with Vitamin C as the active ingredient tingle or sting a little bit, but only for a few minutes.
