FAQ’s...

Q.) Can IPL help severe acne?

A.) Yes. The IPL treatment helps acne in multiple ways. First, the light kills many of the bacteria that cause acne. Second, the light causes a dramatic increase in certain enzymes within the skin that reduce acne. There are many different kinds of acne. In order to decide which treatment is best for you, schedule a free consultation with Dr. Sinclair.

Photodynamic Therapy

For more damaged skin Photodynamic Therapy can make a dramatic improvement. The steps included in Photodynamic Therapy are:

1) We prepare your skin by removing oil. By removing oil from the surface of the skin the next step will be more effective

2) We apply Amino Levulinic Acid (ALA) to the skin. By applying this product to your skin for about 1 hour, your skin will create another natural product called PPIX. PPIX will make your skin extremely sensitive to light for about 2-3 days. Even more important, the ALA is absorbed more by damaged skin (wrinkled, discolored and pre-cancerous)

3) Remove the ALA from the skin.

4) Apply a very bright light to the skin. By choosing a light that is bright enough and is the correct color, the PPIX will absorb the light which will selectively destroy the damaged portions of the skin. This process will continue for the next 2-3 days.

5) Stay indoors, away from bright light for 2-3 days. This is crucial! Going out in the sun too soon can cause severe blistering of the skin. Sun block is not enough to prevent this side effect!

6) Use a moisturizer such as Aquaphor until the dryness resolves.

7) Use sun block for the next 100 years. It does not make much sense to fix the skin if you are going to get more sun damage!

This treatment is similar to a photofacial, but it is approximately 3 x more effective at rejuvenating the skin. For very severely damaged skin, Photodynamic Therapy can be repeated every 30 days until the desired result is achieved.
