The Epilution Cycle Diet for Weight Loss

Why Most Diets Fail

When people go on diets, the goal is usually weight loss. Most people will confirm that even if the diet seems to work at first, when they get off the diet, the weight loss just seems to vanish, and even worse, they gain more weight than they lost. This is actually quite predictable. The act of eating less causes the body to go into "starvation mode". In starvation mode, the brain sends signals to the rest of the body to cut back on metabolism in order to avoid any more weight loss. This is a protective mechanism that has developed over thousands of years to protect people from starving to death due to too much weight loss. The tremendous abundance of food we have today is a relatively new phenomenon. The brain does not know that the diet is being done on purpose to cause weight loss, so it tries as hard as it can to make sure you don't starve to death. That is why most diets fail to produce long term weight loss.

The Brain Can Only Run On Glucose (Sugar)

Every organ in your body, except the brain, has multiple ways of using energy that is stored in protein, fat and carbohydrates. The brain can only use glucose to function. The brain gets the glucose from blood stream. The blood stream gets the glucose from the food that you eat. When you run out of glucose because you are dieting, the brain has an emergency back up source of glucose called glycogen, which is stored in the muscles and liver. An adult human has about a 3-4 day supply of glycogen. When you run out of glycogen, the brain will switch your body into starvation mode...which is the first step in preventing your weight loss. Not good!

Starvation Mode

When your brain decides that it is time for you to go into starvation mode, a lot of things happen. First, your metabolism drops way down, almost to the point that you will only burn as many calories as you eat. The weight loss will crawl to a stop. Furthermore, you will get very tired, fatigued, lethargic, etc. Even worse, the brain will order the body to start digesting your muscles to get the protein the body needs to survive. You may still show some weight loss, but now you are cannibalizing your own muscles! The muscles are what help keep your metabolism burning calories day and night. With less muscle mass, you get weaker and have an even slower metabolism. When you finally go off the diet because you can't stand feeling tired anymore, your new lower metabolism burns even less calories than you did before the diet. You end up gaining back all the weight you lost, and even more. This form of dieting is sometimes called Yo-Yo dieting. It is a very bad way to try to accomplish weight loss.
